Probably the worst kept secret in F1 has now been confirmed. Lance Stroll will partner Sergio Perez at Force India (pending new name) for 2019 in a team owned by a consortium led by his father.
Talks of a mid-season switch to the team never materialised with Esteban Ocon being the barrier. Ocon now confirmed as a Mercedes reserve driver has left the door open for Stroll to join Force India.
2018 was a horrible season for Stroll, 6 points and 18th in the drivers championship is not what he or his father wanted. The frustrations have led to this switch to Force India where they target moving on to the big three teams. There will be a new factory, more staff and a significantly bigger budget.
“This is the beginning of an incredibly exciting journey in my Formula One career. I look forward to working alongside a successful team with a great culture. Said Lance Stroll
“It’s a new challenge and I am excited to embrace this new opportunity!”
Otmar Szafnauer, Force India’s Team Principal had this to say:
“I’m pleased that we can finally confirm Lance’s arrival to race alongside Sergio next year. “
“It gives us an exciting line-up with the perfect blend of youth, talent, and experience. Lance is only twenty and already has two years of Formula One experience under his belt, as well as a podium finish and a front row start.”
