Amid much speculation that Alexander Albon will partner Daniil Kvyat at Toro Rosso for 2019 it has been confirmed that Nissan have released him from his Formula E contract.
It was announced earlier this year that Thai-British Driver Albon would partner Season 2 champion Sébastien Buemi at the Nissan e.dams team. Albion’s affiliation with DAMS in the FIA Formula 2 championship key to him securing that drive. At that time Red Bull and Helmut Marco has dismissed any idea that Albon could drive for them. Albon was of course previously a Red Bull junior.
Red Bull have struggled to find drivers to fill their Toro Rosso seats, unimpressed with the performance of current driver Brendon Hartley and Pierre Gasly being promoted to the senior team they would need a brand new lineup. Toro Rosso would call up Daniil Kvyat who was dropped by the team last year to fill the first seat. Dan Ticktum would be the obvious choice for the drive, he finished P2 in the European Formula 3 championship but lacked the necessary super licence points to join the F1 grid.
Albon finished 3rd in the Formula 2 title and would be a great asset to the F1 grid, it looks likely now that that will come true.
