Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team has confirmed that the 24 year old Italian Antonio Giovinazzi will partner Kimi Raikkonen in the team from 2019. This won’t be the first time that Giovinazzi has competed in Formula One, he replaced an injured Pascal Wehrlein in the beginning of the 2017 season, he impressed in Australia beating Marcus Ericsson of which he will be replacing next season but made errors in both qualifying and the race in China which was his last race to date.
Giovinazzi is a Ferrari driver and is the natural choice for the team, he is fast, has had plenty of running in F1 cars and has done a great job as Ferrari’s test driver, he does of course slot in to one of Ferrari’s “allocated” seats in Sauber which Fred Vassuer confirms:
“We first signed Kimi Raikkonen, an extremely experienced driver who will contribute to the development of our car and will accelerate the progress of our team as a whole.”
“Together with Alfa Romeo, we are delighted to welcome Antonio Giovinazzi, who will take the place of Charles Leclerc.”
“We have already had the opportunity to work with him in the past and he has proven to have great potential.”
Giovinazzi has already competed in Friday practice for Sauber in Germany and Hungary this year as well as in season testing for Haas and Sauber.
In Sauber’s press release, Giovinazzi confirmed his delight with the announcement:
“This is a dream come true, and it is a great pleasure to have the chance to race for this team,”
“As an Italian, it is a huge honour for me to represent a brand as iconic and successful as Alfa Romeo in our sport.”
Sauber have also confirmed that Marcus Ericsson will remain at the team as the teams reserve driver and brand ambassador.
